Bryce Patterson had a somewhat unusual musical origin. He came from a small town in the middle of the Arizona desert. He first started studying piano at the age of 8, hated it, and for the first two years continued only at the mandate of his parents. When he was about 10, he noticed his parents watching a movie called Amadeus. His interest was piqued, and he watched with them–a decision that would affect him profoundly and change the course of his life. He states, “The writers had such an incredibly infectious way of describing music that they could make you fall in love with it yourself. It was the first time I saw a depiction of people who did music on an incredibly high level for a living. Not to mention the incredible acting. All these things worked together to open my eyes for the first time to what music could actually be. From that point on my parents finally got their wish that they would have to beg me to stop practicing.” He received his B.M. in Piano performance from Indiana University, studying under the internationally renowned and recipient of IU’s Distinguished Faculty award Menahem Pressler. His M.M. came from Dr. Irene Peery-Fox, a student of Leon Fleischer, and is currently working on a Doctorate at the University of Utah under the tutelage of Dr. Vedrana Subotic (who, interestingly enough, is also a former alumni of Dr. Pressler in addition to being the founder of the well-known Intermezzo Chamber Music Series based in Salt Lake City, Utah). Bryce has been the recipient of dozens of awards, including faculty awards and artist scholarships from all three universities which he has attended. He placed 1st in the White Mountain Regional Competition, 2nd in the White Mountain Concerto Competition, was Honorably Mentioned in the 2021 Young Artist Competition, and placed 3rd in the 2022 Liszt Festival Competition. |
